In the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War, a mysterious soldier appears in a remote Protestant village. Taciturn, thin, his face disfigured by a scar. The stranger claims to be the heir to a long-abandoned estate and can produce a document confirming his claim. Much to the displeasure of the village community. However, the stranger is determined to find happiness here. His quest for recognition and acceptance is complicated by his secret: the soldier has made his way to the village under a false identity, a false name, and by pretending to be of the opposite sex.
