Mother Mary

-

Mother Mary is a megastar—a glamorous and incomparable presence on stage, yet exhausted and lonely behind the scenes. Overwhelmed by her highly anticipated stage comeback, she seeks refuge with her former friend and companion Sam, a fashion designer who shaped Mother Mary’s iconic style at the beginning of her career. The two women haven’t seen each other in many years, and the rift in their friendship runs deep. In the midst of her personal crisis, Mary asks Sam for help: she wants her to design an outfit for her upcoming comeback. As the new costume takes shape, old conflicts come to light, long-hidden secrets are revealed, and deeply buried wounds resurface. As the lines between the present and painful memories blur, the two women embark on an emotional journey with an uncertain outcome.

What happens when two people, or even two sides of the same person, are bound together by a shared feeling of unshakeable absence? The same thing that happened in another of Lowery’s films: They haunt each other to the ends of the earth. Every song becomes a seance, every bump in the night turns into evidence of a specter. Quoth Virginia Woolf: “Whatever hour you woke there was a door shutting.” This beguiling movie flings them back open just as fast, as it explores how art — and maybe art alone — has the power to heal the wounds that can make it hurt so much in the first place. It’s not a ghost story, it’s a resurrection. - Indiewire
