Gavagai
-
Ulrich Köhler's new film is a multi-layered reflection on art, morality, and colonialism: During the turbulent filming of a Medea adaptation in Senegal, Maja escapes into an affair with her co-star Nourou. Months later, they meet again at the film's premiere in Berlin. Old feelings flare up, but a racist incident strains their reunion. The tensions do not ease as everyone tries to do the right thing. While the ancient tragedy comes to a head on screen, a contemporary drama unfolds.
Köhler takes a close look at these asymmetries: how myths are tamed and colonized—and how feelings become currency. Privileges thus appear unstable, shifting depending on the context—and liberal guilt, if it tries too hard, can further alienate those who are excluded. “Gavagai” is a playful topography of misunderstanding: encounters full of racism and accusations, punctuated by comical undertones. A film about the slippage of meanings – and perhaps Köhler's most courageous analysis of the present to date. - Around the World in 14 Films
