European Arthouse Cinema Day: Preview Bearcave

-

OT: Arkoudotrypa

Once again this year, we’re taking part in European Arthouse Cinema Day on November 22 and will be screening a preview Bearcave, a wonderfully moving queer love story.

Best friends Argyro and Anneta are different, but inseparable. While Argyro works as a farmer, Anneta is the “it girl” of their small Greek mountain village. All the men are at her feet—and, secretly, Argyro’s too. But then Anneta becomes pregnant by her boyfriend, a police officer from the next-largest town. Before life tears the friends apart, Argyro challenges Anneta: Together, they set out on a journey that will change their lives, in search of the mythical Bearcave.

Following the success of their short film of the same name, the directing duo of Stergios Dinopoulos and Krysianna B. Papadakis further develops the story of the queer friends Argyro and Anneta, who fearlessly assert their need for authentic intimacy in the face of a heteronormative world. In 2024, Bearcave won the grand prize in the Works in Progress competition in Thessaloniki. A year later, the film celebrated its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it was awarded the Europa Cinemas Label as the best European film in the Giornate degli Autori section.

'Bearcave' is a genre-bending love odyssey steeped in the folk tales of the Balkan mountain regions. This film embodies a new way of making movies: grassroots and collective, in harmony with the Divine Feminine and nature. An independent film shot in our grandmothers’ homes, with a young, women-led team and a group of talented, up-and-coming Greek filmmakers. — Director’s Statement
