Barrio Triste

-

Music video director STILLZ makes his breathtaking feature film debut with Barrio Triste - a psychedelic, found-footage-style journey through 1980s Medellín. Accompanied by ARCA’s captivating score, Barrio Triste follows four teenagers as they document their own acts of violence, painting a hauntingly poetic portrait of violence and loneliness.

On the outskirts of Medellín, Colombia, in the late 1980s, residents report seeing strange lights descending from the sky. When a reporter arrives to investigate, a motley crew of teenagers from a lawless neighborhood storms the scene and steals his camera. In the hands of its new owners, the camera captures a fascinating glimpse into their hectic lives. As the boys come to terms with their situation, the camera drifts through the neighborhood, documenting the small details that shape their lives. Amid darkness and despair, a spark of hope emerges from an unexpected place. Meanwhile, enigmatic interviews reveal the inner struggles of the boys, who struggle to find the words to express themselves. Are these inner monologues, echoes through time, or pleas from another dimension?

This genre-bending debut by the American-Colombian photographer and music video director STILLZ - who has directed numerous iconic music videos for Bad Bunny and Rosalía - initially appears to be a document of despair, until it soars to transcendent heights. In the process, the raw, colloquial language of the lo-fi video is turned on its head with unmistakable lyrical mastery.

Produced by cult director Harmony Korine, the film premiered in 2025 in the Orrizonti section of the Venice Film Festival.
