Little Amélie or The Character of Rain
-
OT: Amélie et la métaphysique des tubes
When little Amélie is born, she is in a sort of vegetative state: she floats as if in a bubble, no crying, no physical reactions, just curious green eyes that take everything in. But for the Belgian family living in Japan, this is no cause for concern; they are optimistic and adore their little daughter. But on her second birthday, an earthquake shatters Amélie’s bubble, and she is thrown into a world that is completely different from what she had imagined. Only a piece of the finest Belgian chocolate manages to calm the overstimulation of her senses and restore her childlike curiosity about life. Full of joie de vivre, Amélie discovers, alongside Nishio-san, her family’s housekeeper, the wonders of nature and the emotional facets hidden behind the seemingly idyllic family life.
Based on the autobiographical novel by Amélie Nothomb and brought to life in the original animation style of directors Mailys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han, the film tells a tender, moving, and visually breathtaking story about the healing power of human connection.
The film celebrated its world premiere in the “Special Screenings” section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 98th Academy Awards.
