Joanna Arnow zu Gast: The Feeling That The Time For Doing Something Has Passed + Bad At Dancing
429326
We are delighted to welcome American director and actress Joanna Arnow to the Wolf on June 16. We will be screening the 2023 autofictional comedy The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, in which Arnow stars and which was produced by Sean Baker. We will also be screening Arnow’s short film Bad at Dancing, which won a Silver Bear at the 2015 Berlinale.
Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Joanna Arnow and film historian and Wolf friend Brigitta Wagner.
In The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, Arnow explores the inscrutable and often uncomfortable world of dating and sex through the lens of autofiction. Ann, played by Arnow herself, feels stuck in every aspect of her life. She realizes with dismay that the years have flown by amidst her long-term yet casual BDSM relationship, her menial job at a large corporation, and her quarrelsome Jewish family. As she feels increasingly alienated, she grapples with herself and her relationships in a self-deprecating manner. “With I Hate Myself :), I began making personal films because I hoped that stories told with vulnerability and precision would be more relatable and funny for the audience. In these films, I’ve explored the humor in topics like loneliness, sexuality, and the challenges of navigating relationships.” (Joanna Arnow)
In Bad at Dancing, Joanna, as the perpetual third wheel and awkward outsider, increasingly meddles in the relationship of her more charismatic roommate Isabel. In this surreal portrayal of jealous rivalry, the two women test each other’s sexual and emotional boundaries.
