filmPOLSKA: Kunst im Kino

-

The word 'fairy tale' is defined as a story with fantastic content - a short work, often in verse, with a satirical and didactic character or, in short, an invented story. The adjective 'invented' should not be taken too literally; many fairy tales contain messages that are more profound than many a philosophical treatise. The power of observation and the ability to embed these messages into the plot play a central role in these fairy tales. This genre has been explored intensively not only in literature but also in art. This year's edition of 'Kunst im Kino' focuses on these invented artistic stories - fairy tales told with the help of moving images. How is the medium of film used in art to depict such a fantastic world of fairy tales along with their ramblings and spins? Does art completely reinvent the world of fairy tales, or does it simply tell the stories in a different way? Do fairy tales told on film have a different message? We want to explore these questions together with the audience in the context of two film programmes showing seven cinematic-artistic works. The first evening will focus on stories that deal with fears, or on the attempts to deal with them, sometimes with a good dose of humour. But the stories are also about rituals that seem problematic, at least from today's perspective. It is worth taking a closer look at habits and routines. The second evening is devoted to the work of Katarzyna Kozyra who uses fairy tales as an artistic method. However, her productions, disguises and masquerades are not superficial gimmicks but critical analyses in bright colours.

Fairy Tales - Fictional Stories / Dream Images

Programme:

Czarna woda / Black Water

R: Ania Witkowska, PL 2019, 7 min

Humanity is in a pitiful state - and nature even worse. Sensationalism and consumption only drive us into the arms of death. Water loses its healing power and becomes a poisoned spring that slowly dries up.

Forms of Survival

R: Diana Lelonek, PL 2020, 8 min

The video is inspired by emails the artist received from various cultural institutions about cancellations due to the pandemic. She asks about the future of such organisations in the face of crises of climate, economy, democracy, etc.

Węgiel / Coal

R: Ewelina Węgiel, PL 2023, 12 min

The cacophony of fairy tales emanating from the earth are told from the perspective of an open-cast lignite mine that can only be seen from the moon.

Intimacy of Waters

R: Martyna Miller, PL 2020, 14 min

Images of different waters tell us an intimate story of eternal struggle and healing experiences. Moments, rhythms and places become signals of intense experiences, feelings and states.

Lamentations

R: Alicja Wysocka, PL 2021, 6 min

In a pagan ritual still widely practised today, the Slavic goddess Marzanna (Morana) is drowned. In a reflection on the Christianisation of the Slavs and the symbolism of water, a ritual of resurrection is created.

Fairy Tales - Fictional Stories / Focus Katarzyna Kozyra

Programme:

Letnia opowieść / Summer Tale

R: Katarzyna Kozyra, PL 2008, 20 min

This colourful modern fairy tale is the artist's statement on the role and value of the male element in her world. Masquerades explore myths, taboos and gender stereotypes while in search of universal truths.

Sen córki Linneusza / A Dream of Linnaeus' Daughter

R: Katarzyna Kozyra, PL 2018, 30 min

The film was shot in Uppsala, in the gardens of the famous 18th century Swedish botanist Carl von Linné. Katarzyna Kozyra takes on the role of Elisabeth Christina von Linné, one of his forgotten daughters.
