Birds of a Feather: Female Friendship Movies #3: The Ceremony

357623

"Birds of a Feather" is a new series dedicated to female friendship movies taking place every first Wednesday of a month in our studio. Showing films spanning different decades and regions, "Birds of a Feather" puts the spotlight on films that portray friendships – the good, the bad, and the twisted.
Curated by Eli Lewy, co-director of Final Girls Berlin Film Festival.
All screenings will be accompanied by short introductions and/or discussions (partly via zoom).

On 8 May, we will be showing Claude Chabrol's wonderfully dark psychological thriller The Ceremony (La Cérémonie, France 1995, 111', French with english subtitles) starring Sandrine Bonnaire and Isabelle Huppert.

Sophie (Sandrine Bonnaire) works as a maid for the Leliévre family in Saint-Malo, where she befriends the outspoken postal clerk Jeanne (Isabelle Huppert). However, when Jeanne encourages her to rebel against her employers, Sophie is dismissed from her position. Brought together by their hidden secrets, the two women decide to take revenge. "The Ceremony is a film about class struggle, about humiliation, about social difference." (Sandrine Bonnaire)
