YI YI
-
NJ Jian lives in Taipei with his wife Min-Min, their two children and her mother. Despite earlier successes, his company is facing bankruptcy. Hope comes in the form of a collaboration with Japanese developer Ota. On the day of Min-Min's brother A-Di's wedding, the grandmother suffers a stroke. NJ also meets his childhood sweetheart Sherry again. From this day onwards, the family's life becomes increasingly unbalanced.
YI YI is a masterpiece of world cinema that presents a panorama of human life through the lens of a Taiwanese family at the turn of the millennium, with great sensitivity and a touch of melancholy in outstandingly composed images. A film like a perceptive and tender look in the mirror. Following the re-release of the 4K-restored version at the 2025 Cannes International Film Festival, the film, considered the pinnacle of director Edward Yang's work, is finally back on the big screen.
YI YI was included in the New York Times' list of the 100 best films of the 21st century and ranked third in a 2010 Film Comment poll of the most important films of the decade.
