How is movement created in an image? How do you make a movie?

This new workshop series, consisting of six different workshops, explores pre-cinematic toys—from the wonder disc and the optical illusion device to the wheel of life—as we examine our own perception and experiment with various ways to create the illusion of movement. We’ll learn how to animate individual images. This will result in short “films” that participants can take home or have displayed at the Wolf Kino. Two workshops on a single theme will be held each month.

In November, we’ll be focusing on the magic drum (also known as the wheel of life), the “zoetrope.” Hopping, jumping, running, and flying were popular motifs in the prehistory and early history of cinema. We’ll create strips of images that show lifelike movements when viewed through the magic drum.
