KineKiez: Angela Schanelec's early Films + Q&A
-
We are delighted to continue showing treasures from the Deutsche Kinemathek archive at regular intervals in 2026 as part of the KineKiez series!
In January, we'll be presenting a program of films by Angela Schanelec, which were made during her studies at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb). The films not only offer an insight into the artistic beginnings of the award-winning filmmaker, but also reflect the spirit of the early 1990s in Berlin shortly after reunification. In this sense, the program sets the tone for this year's Berlinale retrospective, which is dedicated to the 1990s.
In Ich bin den Sommer über in Berlin geblieben (I Stayed in Berlin Over the Summer), four young people are searching for each other and themselves: an author is working on a story about her past relationship, and her ex-partner comes to visit. Another couple crosses their paths, and new connections are formed. In Angela Schanelec's film, this constellation remains in a state of limbo – not only between the characters, but also between reality and imagination. In the period of upheaval following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Berlin provides the perfect backdrop for this openness of perception and life concepts. In Schöne gelbe Farbe (Beautiful Yellow Color), a couple moves in together and then breaks up again. And in Prag, März 1992 (Prague, March 1992), the filmmaker strolls through the city, observing everyday life and reading Bohumil Hrabal.
