Ama-San

-

The Ama-San are maintaining a thousand-year Japanese tradition. They are the “women of the sea.“ Without oxygen or any other aids, they dive deep into the Pacific Oceanto collect mussels and other ocean treasures. In Wagu, a fishing village in the Ise Peninsula, Matsumi, and Masumi dive every day not knowing what they’ll find. Underwater, their delicate bodies turn into those of sea hunters. Bound by sisterhood, women are the primary source of income and essential to their families having carved out a rare space of respect for themselves.

„Cláudia Varejão’s camera embarks on an enigmatic and occasionally baffling study of a hypnotic world.“
– Leslie Felperin, The Guardian
„An enigmatic yet extraordinarily serene film that speaks a lot of truth.“
– Giorgia Del Don, Cineuropa
