Fireflies is a print film magazine created between Berlin and Melbourne. Each issue assembles an international group of contributors to celebrate the work of two extraordinary filmmakers through a novel and multi-disciplinary approach to criticism which spans personal essays, interviews and creative responses including fiction, poetry, experimental prose and visual art.

On October 21st, the magazine’s editors will be at Wolf to launch and present the fifth issue of Fireflies, which is dedicated to Angela Schanelec and Agnès Varda. Three of the visual artists who contributed to the issue will also give live performances of the works they created by drawing inspiration from the films of the issue’s directors:

Sam Smith’s video performance deconstructs and intertwines the oeuvres of Schanelec and Varda. Sam is an Australian video and performance artist working in the UK. Recent solo projects include Whitechapel Gallery (London, UK); Centro de Artes Visuais (Coimbra, PT); KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin, DE).

Puck Vonk’s sound performance explores the affective nature of objectlessness of the voice, noise and sound in Schanelec’s films. Puck is a visual artist from the Netherlands; looking at her work involves reading and listening. Letters are things and spoken words have consequences.

Eli Cortiñas’ lecture performance delves into the implications of the femininity of Varda’s characters. Eli is an award-winning Spanish artist whose practice revolves around the idea of challenging cinematic memory.
