Under the label STEPPENWOLF we bring films that we love to cinemas around Germany. The STEPPENWÖLFE are films that have no distribution in Germany and that we show in our own cinema, because we think they are amazing. Our first STEPPENWOLF was the Egyptian film IN THE LAST DAYS OF THE CITY OF by Tamer El Said. In this case Wolf co-produced the film, the beautiful music was recorded here at Wolf before the reconstruction of our cinema, and we accompanied the creation and journey of the film with great enthusiasm. With both passion and personal commitment, we manage and oversee the German cinema starts of the films, regardless of our very limted resources. Of course, we also show the STEPPENWOLF films in our own cinema where we speak about them at our bar alongside having film talks with our audience. With STEPPENWOLF we want to make these great films accessible to a larger audience.

Located off the coast of Indonesia, the Australian territory of Christmas Island is inhabited by migratory crabs travelling in their millions from the jungle towards the ocean, in a movement that has been provoked by the full moon for hundreds of thousands of years. Poh Lin Lee is a “trauma therapist” who lives with her family in this seemingly idyllic paradise. Every day, she talks with the asylum seekers held indefinitely in a high-security detention centre hidden in the island’s core, attempting to support them in a situation that is as unbearable as its outcome is uncertain. As Poh Lin and her family explore the island’s beautiful yet threatening landscape, the local islanders carry out their “hungry ghost” rituals for the spirits of those who died on the island without a burial. They make offerings to appease the lost souls who are said to be wandering the jungles at night looking for home. ISLAND OF THE HUNGRY GHOSTS is a hybrid documentary that moves between the natural migration and the chaotic and tragic migration of the humans, which is in constant metamorphoses by the unseen decision-making structures.

Released on 17. October in cinemas across Germany. More info here

Endless Poetry

Santiago de Chile, during the thrilling years of the 40s and the 50s. “Alejandrito” Jodorowsky, aged twenty, decides to become a poet against the will of his family. He is introduced in the inner circle of the artistic and intellectual avant-garde of the time and meets Enrique Lihn, Stella Diaz, Nicanor Parra and many other promising but anonymous young writers who will become the masters of Latin America’s modern literature. Totally immersed in this world of poetic experimentation, they live together as few have dared to live before: sensually, authentically, freely, madly.
